Welcome to Nanwalek

We flew into the village today and should go back to Homer in a couple days to barge our stuff over.  Flying into the village gave me a spectacular view of the surrounding area.  Since the plane seated 5 people (including the pilot) it also helped me overcome any concerns I had about landing on a small strip surrounded by water.  I was simply excited to have landed anywhere.  I assume the more I fly in small planes the less I will notice its sudden dips and rises with the wind.  At least that's what I'm praying for.  Mike assures me the flight today was really quite smooth, but more than once I found myself thinking "What did I me get myself into?" and "Please, Jesus, I can't die before we even get to begin."

Several from the school were waiting for us when we landed to help us take our things to the house and gave us fish and flowers to welcome us and help us until we can get the rest of our things here.  They also took us for a walk around the village.  I think Mike described the place best with "a little slice of heaven".  We have a beautiful mountain on one side, the ocean in front, and amazing sunsets to the right.  I'm not sure what God has planned for us, but I'm definitely going to enjoy the view along this journey.

View from our front porch!

  3. So glad you finally made it safely. You're braver than I am because I'd have had to miss the view because of the sedation they would have to put me under to even get into the plane! We love you guys! We and our church are praying for you as you begin this new chapter. So proud of you both for following your dreams.
